The Following Signs Point to a Failing Automatic Transmission

Generally speaking, you should plan to have your automatic transmission serviced every 30,000 miles. This gives us here at Automobile Diagnostics a chance to make sure that the fluid does not need to be replaced and that there are no problems with the internal parts, gaskets, seals, and transmission pan. If you notice any of the following signs listed below, bring your vehicle to our shop right away. Your automatic transmission could be failing.

Check Engine Light

One of the first things that will happen is your check engine light will come on. This light is the warning light your vehicle’s main computer chip uses to alert you of trouble with a system that doesn’t have a light of its own. If the transmission sensors sent an error code to the main computer chip, it will turn on the check engine light.

Burning Odors

Burning odors are an indication that the transmission is overheating. This could be caused by low transmission fluid if you haven’t had the fluid flushed and replaced in over 30,000 miles. Driving with an overheating transmission will cause additional damage to the gears.

Leaking Fluid

You might end up with a transmission fluid leak out of one of the seals or gaskets or the transmission pan. Transmission fluid can also leak out of the torque converter. It’s important to have the leak addressed as soon as possible. Otherwise, you’ll end up with low transmission fluid in the system.

Odd Sensations

If your transmission is struggling, you may feel every shift even though you shouldn’t. Your vehicle may shake, vibrate, or wobble when the transmission shifts the gears. This is a sign that the transmission needs servicing as soon as possible to avoid additional damage.

Odd Sounds

Strange sounds are also assigned the transmission needs to be serviced. These sounds include clunking when you put the vehicle into gear and grinding or squealing when the automatic transmission shifts gears. The only sound you should hear when the gears shift is the changes in the engine’s RPMs.

Shifting Problems

Finally, if your vehicle’s transmission is having problems shifting through the gear cycle, slipping out of gear, or refusing to go into gear, your transmission definitely needs attention right away. Again, it’s important to address the problem to avoid damaging your transmission further.
