There’s a reason why vehicle manufacturers recommend that you have your car serviced every 30,000 miles; it may need a tune-up. If you are having any of the problems listed below, these are signs that your car, SUV, or truck is overdue for a tune-up, and it needs new spark plugs.
Hard/No Starts
A few things happen when you press the start button or turn the ignition key. The starter turns the engine over so it can bring fuel and air into the combustion chamber. The starter then powers the spark plugs so they will generate sparks. If the process stops there because the spark plugs cannot generate sparks, you will find it difficult if not impossible to start your car.
Misfiring Engine
Even if the engine does start, it may misfire severely and stall afterward. If the engine continues to run, you will feel your automobile jerk and hear the engine cut out. This is a sign that the engine is misfiring. In other words, you have one cylinder or a handful of cylinders that do not have working spark plugs. Unfortunately, your vehicle needs a tune-up to run smooth again.
Rough Engine Idle
In fact, even the engine idle is going to be rough if the engine is misfiring. This means your car will vibrate when you are sitting at a stop. If you listen carefully, you will hear the engine cut out when a spark plug does not fire in the cylinder. If your plugs are in terrible shape, your engine may stall every time you are sitting at an idle. Your acceleration will also lag.
Surging/Lagging
Speaking of lagging, the engine can lag when the spark plugs are not firing properly. In order for your vehicle to run efficiently and powerfully, all of the cylinders must have working spark plugs. This is where the term firing on all cylinders comes from. If the spark plugs are misfiring by firing too many times, your engine and vehicle will surge and pick up speed.
Poor Economy
Finally, keeping your vehicle tuned ensures you always get the best fuel mileage possible. If your automobile is overdue for a tune-up, you will find yourself heading to the service station more often. Unfortunately, this is because the engine is running inefficiently.
